Late in the evening after a sunny day. The sun is about to set, the world is waiting for the night to come. Dark rain clouds cover the sky over the lake, a rain shower passes by.
On the threshold of spring, I walk through the woods early on a cold and misty morning. Shreds of mist rise from the ground, the day is beginning.
A forest in the mist is fascinating and mysterious
At the end of a gray spring day, a light breeze rises and the mist that has lain like a blanket over the land and sea all day disappears.
We all know that spring brings new life to the unfamiliar forest, no matter how dark it can be there. New life, nourishing for everything alive.
Yet there is a fear of entering that unknown, that darkness.
But knowing we need that renewal, I set out. Will you join me, come after me?

Earth Cries
Huge amounts of toxic
content drowns the lands
Dead eyes,
the earth cries
The sun colors the morning
in the hues of dead trees
on the banks of greed
How high may become
the price the future
will have to pay?
" The computing power for AI models requires immense – and increasing – amounts of natural resources. Legislation is required to prevent environmental crisis.* "
Why can companies develop products and services that are a danger to a human being or even humanity? And that even without making a proper risk assessment beforehand and submitting it for approval to a government agency that judges on objective criteria that protect humanity and its home?
And why, after the production and delivery of a product or service is no longer of interest to them, can companies turn around and walk away with pockets bulging with money, after which a government becomes responsible for the damage and you and I foot the bill?
So why do you and I accept that we are footing the bill for the second time? Didn’t we already pay heavily for the highly profitable products and services for the companies as well?
And why do you and I allow money, the ultimate driver of greed, to rule us to a degree that our children and grandchildren will end up in a world that is completely poisoned and unlivable, even in those locations where Western man has been able to build his destructive world in a comfortably mild climate for the past millennia?
Are we so addicted to consuming that we do not care at all, or that we think (hope) that inventiveness and not yet existing technology will bring the solution to problems that are already so big that we cannot comprehend the consequences, while technology has never yet brought an opolution to a big problem without in turn creating new, often bigger problems?
So tell me, what do you think a 1.5-degree temperature rise in the next decade will mean for the earth in - let's say - 150 years if it is not also and above all accompanied by an immediate end to greenhouse gas emissions, pollution and poisoning of air, water and land, depletion of the earth, destruction of biodiversity, ...?
Do you grant your grandchildren and/or the grandchildren of your family and friends, that world?
* Note: we are already in a huge environmental quadruple crisis. Are we longing for one more?

Marshes captivate with their mysterious allure and fragile beauty, influencing Jacob Berghoef's latest 'Flat Lands' and 'Digital Art' series. His transformative digital art, derived from photos taken at Overasseltse En Hatertse Vennen, manifests in limited edition prints that embody the ethereal marshland atmosphere through surreal editing. His works are available for sale, complete with authenticity guarantees.
Lying on our backs in the woods, we observe nature's symphony flying above, and the gentle dance of light amid the trees—a phenomenon known as Shinrin-Yoku, or "forest bathing," celebrated in Japan. It refreshes the body and mind, enhancing health and well-being. Anuscka's original blog post inspired a digital artwork, capturing this therapeutic essence.

In the tranquil medieval village of Corenno Plinio, narrow streets and old stairs evoke a time long past, with few signs of modern tourism. The artwork 'Awakening (2)' from the 'Lost Cities' collection is a digitally altered photograph, aiming to capture a surrealistic atmosphere.

I feel it as my mission to make people aware of the beauty, power and simultaneously fragility of nature. Yet at the same time, this sometimes feels like hypocrisy because I am part of the society that is causing the destruction of the habitability of the earth. Even though I do my best to live simply and keep my carbon footprint considerably smaller than "the use" of 1 earth.
At times when I feel that, I also feel an urge to create a work with a poignant message....

[scorched]
adjective
UK /skɔːtʃt/ US /skɔːrtʃt/
slightly burned, or damaged by fire or heat
While the ice caps are melting and the oceans and seas are warming and being robbed and poisoned, man on land is not sitting still either. Or perhaps better to say, that's where the misery begins, because that's where man has settled and does most of his 'ingenuity'.
The Western world should really be called the 'land of never enough'.
There where consumption was invented, at the same time as growth for growth's sake and the 'creation of shareholder value', or profits that are never high enough.
Our addiction to money is so strong, that we are prepared to exhaust the earth for it, to destroy plants and animals and to make the world of the children and grandchildren of humanity hot, in many places even unbearably hot.
Many people even think (still!) that the consequences of global warming will not be too bad. After all, we are smart, a technical solution will be found that will allow us to continue living the way we are used to...
Meanwhile, larger and larger parts of the earth are being scorched. Scorching by the ever-increasing temperatures. By spraying poison to make the yield of intensive agriculture as high as possible. By the emission of poison into the air, land and water as a by-product of our endless consumption. By the fires that rage around the world day in and day out as a result of increasing drought. By fires started by man to turn even more nature into monoculture with endless fields of genetically engineered crops on exhausted, diseased soil.
You all know by now that a text like this accompanying a work of art is not quite my style. But sometimes you just have to stand outside, look up at the sky and scream really loud...
A cry for climate action...

Yesterday I climbed up the hill
But halfway there, the wind and fog made climbing hard
The grass slippery with moisture,
and smelling of spring
A song helped me to continue on my way
Once at the top I used the moss as a pillow
while the voices of the wind in the trees soothed me to sleep.
Last Thursday morning Anuscka and I were intensely enjoying our introduction to Vietnamese coffee. We only drink 1 cup of coffee a day, so when you taste a fantastically beautiful coffee for the first time, you enjoy it with very small sips.
When my cup was empty, I looked, as always, at the "markings" the coffee grounds had left on the bottom.
I grind and brew my coffee by hand, pouring it through a metal mesh filter, so there is always some sediment in there. Mmmmmm.... 🙂
The 'drawing' I saw fascinated me, and inspired me to create this artwork.
It is a great pleasure to mention here the 3 inspiring women who, without knowing it, participated in this creation. If you don't know them yet, visit their profile on LinkedIn and read what inspires them. Very worthwhile !
Niloofar mahafel, a wonderful painter from Iran, who trusts me to be her representative AND sent me many photos of the wonderful Iranian landscape. They are a huge inspiration ! No doubt she will recognize the picture of one of her beautiful landscapes in this artwork.
Daphne Nguyen, she introduced me to the coffee coming from her company's coffee farms in Vietnam. Anuscka and I love this coffee, the passion she and her colleagues have for coffee and the enormous commitment to the coffee farmers. I'm sure she never expected that her coffee would become the basis for an artwork...
Karina Mosser, a wonderful painter and a great person to work with. Recently she made a series of abstracts for me to use as background for my digital creations. Through a green abstract painting of hers, I managed to create a work that brings together Iran and Vietnam as a landscape for my "coffee tree".

My wife Anuscka and I do not celebrate Christmas.
So my wish for all of you is somewhat different from the traditional Christmas greeting:
I wish you silent days, with a light in your heart for the earth, for nature and for all the needy people.
Whatever you celebrate today, make it a beautiful, colorful day, and take a moment to think and care about all that is vulnerable and needy on this earth.

The word ‘solstice’ comes from the Latin solstitium meaning ‘Sun stands still’, because it seems that the movement of the Sun’s path, whether north or south, stops for a few days before reversing direction. On the Northern hemisphere, winter solstice means that the light returns: the sun turns towards us again. The days grow longer and the light regains its dominance.
I love this time of the year, in which the whole cosmos seems to come to a standstill for a moment.
I wish you peaceful dark days, filled with warmth, lights in the home and in the heart, and time to enjoy the silence and beauty of nature at rest. May we absorb a piece of that into our bodies and minds so that we can begin the new season of light full of energy.

I stand still and watch,
as the pale light of dawn
silently dispels the night.
I must admit that I have enjoyed converting a small selection of my forest photographs into intensely dark black and white artworks. They were of course meant to express my concern about the climate and the lack of climate action.
But they have also become a special way for me to look at my earlier work.
I hope you also enjoyed how the sparse light gave these artworks an intimate atmosphere.
Herewith the last one in this triptych. Early in the morning the light penetrates into the darkest corners of the world. After every night, a new day arrives…

A unique fusion of fine art photography and painting !
Sunrise brings a serenade beyond the dark silence of the night. The tender light gently touches the water and the reeds, in a duet with the wind
In recent months, the painter Karina Mosser (USA) and I have been collaborating in various ways in the creation of new artworks. And with this artwork "Sunrise Serenade", we have taken a new path. Karina painted on a print of one of my photographs.
The photo is printed on museum quality Hahnemühle Photo Rag. And on it Karina painted with ink and watercolor.
The buyer of this work will receive it from Karina, signed and with certificate of authenticity.
I made this impressionistic artwork which forms the basis of this work, in March 2019 in south and south east Sweden.
Hundreds of small islands lie off the coast of south-east Sweden.
They usually consist of no more than rocky soil with shrubs and trees, surrounded by a collar of reeds.
And on this beautiful winter day, at sunrise the light plays a serenade on the reeds, accompanied by the wind.

All day in the spring rain
Wandering between the trees
Birds sing a green song
Do you know the sound of green? Listen to the birds in the trees after the rain.
Do you know the scent of green? Take a stroll through a wet spring forest.
Two weeks ago we spent a few days on the beautiful island of Langeland. On a rainy day we went to the northern half of the island. Right after a huge downpour, we walked into a dense forest that looked so fairytale-like, sensual and intensely green, it didn't seem real. Everything was green, the color, the scent, the sounds….
'Green Song' is a new artwork in my collection 'Secret Places'.
I made this photo in the beautiful old forest near the town of Tranekær on the island of Langeland, Denmark.

The second work in the collaboration with Tress.c

A fellow artist told me about her way of working in an introductory conversation via the LinkedIn messenger. I wrote "if you have any ideas for collaboration sometime, let's hear it". And I totally meant that, because I love working with other artists.
That she would answer within two seconds "Oh, I already do !", I did not quite expect...
Tress.c (Visual Narrative Art) is a special artist. Using her own photography with edits in multiple layers, she creates artworks that tell a story. A visual story about the life of her daughter, who lives with "invisible" disabilities in the form of complex neurological disorders.
And now, as a beginning of our collaboration, she has created two artworks, using one of my photographs. The result is a powerful diptych representing the healing power of nature for her daughter. The power that calms her body, mind and spirit.
Tress.c has chosen to create this diptych to show her daughter's innocence, her strength and that inner battle that shines brightly in her eyes. To show how she is fighting for her own life.
Here is the first artwork: Crying Pines. "Crying Pines", is full of light and calm, to show the victories, the peace in her daughter's heart and where she is facing the viewers, challenging them to look at her as a whole, not as a handicap.

Trees tangled

The sound of a light breeze
Cherry blossom petals
dazzling into the light
Spring. A gentle breeze takes the petals of fading cherry blossoms into the light.
And now the cherry tree is also in bloom. A dozen bees and bumblebees are busy collecting pollen. There are not many bees, but they are here when the fruit trees bloom !

Many, many times I have tried to make a photo in my style with my 'old' iPhone 4s. Especially early in the morning, when I walk the dog. Many hundreds of photos, and never there was one to my liking. Until, one beautiful morning, my movement of the phone was apparently quick and sure enough to successfully capture this flaming sunrise on dragon wings.
'On Dragon Wings' is a new artwork in my collection 'Wavy Fields'. I made it early in the morning while walking through the fields near my house.

You, harvester, who work so peacefully
Oh you, who harvest the wheat so peacefully
Harvest the sorrows from my soul
Harvest them and carry them away with you
I love Fado music and, more in general, Portuguese folk music.
One of the most beautiful Portuguese songs for me is Meu Alentejo sung by Dulce Pontes (see the link at the bottom of this post).
But even without knowing a translation of the lyrics (and I don't speak a word of Portuguese), this song really touched me the first time I heard it. And it still does...
Dulce is a singer who sings evocatively. Her voice is full of emotion. After I read the translation of the lyrics, I immediately saw a field before me with waving grain, ready to be harvested.
So I chose this artwork to go with the song by Dulce Pontes. A tribute to her, and to the region Alentejo she sings about.
The original lyrics and translation are also below the image.
'Carry Away My Sorrows' is a new artwork in my collection 'Wavy Fields'. I made it in the fields near the village Helligsø, North Jutland, Denmark.

The original lyrics:
Eu não sei que tenho em Évora
Que de Évora me estou lembrando.
Quando chego ao rio Tejo
As ondas me vão levando...
Abalei do Alentejo,
Olhei para trás chorando.
Alentejo da minh'alma
Tão longe me vais ficando!
Ceifeira que andas à calma
Ai, e à calma ceifando o trigo
Ceifa as penas da minh'alma
Ceifa-as leva-as contigo
Abalei do Alentejo,
Olhei para trás chorando.
Alentejo da minh'alma
Tão longe me vais ficando!
English translation:
I don't know what I left in Évora
That makes me remember Évora
When I reach the Tagus river
Its waves carry my soul away.
I suddenly left the Alentejo
And looked back, crying
Oh, Alentejo of my soul
You're so very far away from me!
You, harvester, who work so peacefully
Oh you, who harvest the wheat so peacefully
Harvest the sorrows from my soul
Harvest them and carry them away with you
I suddenly left the Alentejo
And looked back, crying
Oh, Alentejo of my soul
You're so very far away from me!

A pine fragrance,
damp ground awakens
The first light
softly caresses the moss
A spring morning blends
with dark scents of the night
It's early in the morning. The first sunlight touches the moss between the trees. And as if the forest had been waiting for it, immediately the most wonderful scents rise up and mingle with the nightly smell of damp leaves and wood.

At the end of a gray spring day, a light breeze rises and the mist that has lain like a blanket over the land and sea all day disappears. A fairly dense cloud cover seems to conclude the day without sunshine.
But then a clear, cloudless sky appears on the horizon. I run outside with my camera, moments like this usually only last about 10 minutes....

Morning breaks over the silent forest
Clouds of mist rise from the moss,
carrying the cold of a winter's night
On the threshold of spring, I walk through the woods early on a cold and misty morning. Shreds of mist rise from the ground, the day is beginning.

The sun disappears behind the mountain peaks,
cold winds torment the valley
and awake the dreams of this night
Another photo that I made on the occasion of the exhibition 'El Duende' in 2017. I made two series of photos in the mountains near Bellano, Italy. When making those series, the theme of the exhibition inspired me. I went looking for the spirit of mountains and valleys.
Duende is identified as the spirit of evocation, physical and emotional response elicited by art.
Having the Duende is having that thrill that makes you smile or cry when seeing a particularly expressive artistic performance.
The term is often used in folk music in particular in Flamenco, during the most intense performance.

No one in the forest
Thoughts come and go, aloneness
Silence of the morning light
One foggy day, I go to a forest near our house. I hope it will be foggy in the forest too, unfortunately that turns out not to be the case. But the morning light and the silence in the deserted forest, create a special atmosphere. It gives space to let your thoughts run free.

shivering in winter winds,
cold water hides the dreams

Colors disappear in the mist
I am overwhelmed by silence,
alone, afraid that I've lost my way
But then I realize, to find the way
is to stop looking
A gray, foggy day. A day like so many, where you only see vague outlines of the path you are walking. The silence and lack of sight are oppressive at first. Until you regain peace and confidence, and let the trees guide you.

A lonely cold morning
Footsteps muffled
Endless carpet of stillness
Fresh snow, as far as the eye can see. The forest looks spacious, light, and larger than usual. It is quiet, and the world feels deserted. Only the muffled crunch of my footsteps in the fresh snow.
After two years without 'real' snow, last week we had a few centimeters of snow. A wonderful moment to enjoy the silence of a white forest.

Embrace the joy of daylight
Find comfort in the bright light
of a fresh breeze and the winter sun
Our day with no screens, no internet and (almost) no electricity was a breath of fresh air.
Literally, because we took a long walk. Figuratively, because we reflected and talked about our online time and use of electrical devices. Even in our minimalistic household, this generated several immediately implementable ideas, providing peace of mind, time for reflection, time to do different things for a change, and saving on our CO2 emissions.
So we will continue to do this. One day i-off and e-off every week.
We can heartily recommend it, if only to become aware of your i-use and e-use and the alternatives that are available.

Embrace the silence of darkness
Find comfort in the scant light
of a candle and the winter sun
Anuscka and I decided to spend a day "in darkness" every week. Figuratively speaking that is, it will be a day with minimal use of electricity and no use of the internet, and screens in general.
Why? Because we are curious to see how we like it. Because we want to spend less time behind screens. Because we would like to have a recurrent period of silence and reflection. Because using very little electricity for a day contributes significantly to reducing our CO2 footprint...

"You white men are lost. You don't understand the land. Too many silly questions.
Your presence on this earth will come to an end.
You have no sense. No purpose. No direction."
Where The Green Ants Dream (1984, Werner Herzog), Quote: Miliritbi (played by Wandjuk Marika)
Associating is a strange phenomenon. Sometimes a line from a song or poem comes straight into my mind when I see a photo I've made.
When my wife saw this photo yesterday, that I had made half an hour before, the first thing she said was: 'Where The Green Ants Dream'.
Images of that movie immediately came to my mind, and although this photo has no direct relationship to it, the title stuck in my head for this photo.
It fits perfectly for me...
'Where The Green Ants Dream' is a new photo in the collection 'Secret Places'.
